We thought it might be fun to see how crochet has changed since 1860. We here at For the Love of Yarn have not crocheted this up, nor can we be any help with the pattern. This is just a reprint of a pattern taken from an 1860’s ladies magazine. Enjoy and please share with us a picture if you do try and create this on your own! The following is exactly how the pattern was printed in Peterson’s magazine:

Infant’s Shawl in Crochet
By Mrs. Jane Weaver

The pattern for this will be found, printed in colors, in the front of the number.

Materials. – 2 ½ oz blue split zephyr, 1 ½ oz. drab split zephyr, small bone crochet hook.

For the Centre. – With the blue wool make a ch ¾ of a yard long. Work in shells 6 dc stitches to the shell 1 ch between each shell. Make this centre piece perfectly square.

For the Border. – Tie on the drab wool, work in shells (in the same manner as described above) all round the centre piece, widening at the corners sufficiently to keep the work flat. From 8 to 4 rows as the fancy may suggest.

For the Hood. – Turn over one point of the shawl, and run a cord through the bias thus made, as seen in the design, also another code through the outer edge of the border belonging to the point turned over. Draw this cord enough to shape the hood, finishing with cord and tassels.
